Nurturing the Heart of Education: A Two-Day Seminar on Emotional Intelligence

Valencia, Negros Oriental — In an effort to deepen the emotional and interpersonal competencies of its educators, Colegio de San Pedro – Recoletos and San Pedro Academy – Recoletos held a two-day seminar and training on Emotional Intelligence at the refreshing retreat setting of Pulangbato Falls Resort. The event brought together the faculty and staff of both institutions for a formative experience that emphasized not only intellectual growth but also emotional maturity and relational awareness—hallmarks of transformative education. The first day opened with a powerful and reflective session centered on self-awareness and self-regulation, two pillars of emotional intelligence that are essential for educators who seek to become more mindful and effective in their profession. Through guided reflections, interactive discussions, and real-life applications, participants were invited to examine their own emotional triggers, thought patterns, and behavioral responses. This process enabled educators to understand how managing one’s emotions can lead to more thoughtful actions and reactions—especially in the classroom setting. By gaining a clearer understanding of the self, participants took an important step toward fostering more empathetic and emotionally supportive relationships with students. As the day unfolded, it became evident that the session was more than just a theoretical exploration. It was a transformative journey toward personal insight, professional development, and a renewed commitment to student-centered education.

The second day began with a Eucharistic Mass presided over by Rev. Fr. Raul M. Buhay, OAR, grounding the participants in spiritual reflection and unity. This sacred beginning set the tone for a day of meaningful engagement and emotional depth. Morning sessions tackled motivation and empathy—key elements in understanding what drives both teachers and learners. Facilitators emphasized how recognizing the internal motivations of students, and responding to them with compassion, can lead to improved academic engagement and emotional well-being. In the afternoon, the focus shifted to listening skills and social intelligence, equipping participants with techniques to build stronger, more authentic connections. These competencies are vital in creating inclusive, respectful, and emotionally safe classroom environments. Throughout the two-day seminar, the presence of school leaders Rev. Fr. Vicente L. Ramon, Jr., OAR of CSP-R and Rev. Fr. Roweno Eugenio L. Hamo, OAR of SPA-R served as a source of inspiration and affirmation. Their active involvement underscored the importance of emotional intelligence as a foundational value in Recollect education—one that goes beyond academics and reaches into the heart of formation. This seminar marks a significant milestone in the continuing development of Petrinian educators. As the participants return to their classrooms, they carry with them not just new insights, but a renewed sense of purpose: to teach with awareness, to lead with empathy, and to connect with students in ways that inspire both minds and hearts. In an age where emotional resilience and interpersonal skills are more important than ever, this formation reminds us that true education begins within—and radiates outward through meaningful human connection.
